During the week of Alachua County’s Migrant Education Migrant Farm Worker’s Fair in April, 2009, Direct Development International collected and distributed a large variety of t-shirts, jeans, sweatshirts, and socks to the workers in need.

DDI also distributed Spanish/English language guides to aid the workers in learning practical and important English words and phrases.  Our members were excitedly welcomed by the workers who were eager to converse and learn.

The Migrant Farm Worker’s Fair was full of warm hearts, hospitality, and excitement.  Medical students from the University of Florida offered check-ups and physical exams, as well as diabetes and blood pressure checks.  HIV testing and education is usually offered as well.  Free food was offered; bagels, doughnuts, bread, and croissants, were distributed to the workers.

According to the Migrant Education website, “The primary goal of the migrant education program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment.”

The program offers assistance to migrant children under the age of 22 who have moved for the purpose of seeking seasonal employment in agriculture, fishing, or food processing activities.

You can learn more about the program and how you can get involved from the Migrant Education website: http://www.sbac.edu/~seccurr/migrant.htm
